Hello … is this thing on?
I know the summer months are upon us for the NHL as players and coaches and managers are at their summer cottages.
But the fact we have several restricted free agents unsigned makes me wonder why general managers are not using every tool in their tool kit.
Mitch Marner, Brock Boeser, Matthew Tkachuk, Patrik Laine, Brayden Point and more could make every team in the league better. Yes, Marner’s compensation to sign an offer sheet from another team would net the Leafs four first round picks if they don’t match. That’s a heavy price.
But the others on this list would be worth two first round picks, a second and a third and maybe get them at least one first round pick, a second and a third.
Some GMs fear retribution later if they were to offer sheet one of these players. But, rules are rules and you can sign talent currently waiting on a better deal from their own teams.
Managers are cheating their team and their fans by not pulling out this tool. It doesn’t surprise me as hockey traditionally lives by a secret, unwritten code. And here we have another one getting in the way of some good off-season drama.
