The Ministry of Environment and the Water Security Agency are overseeing cleanup and remediation efforts in Moose Jaw after an oil leak earlier this week.
In a news release, the City says officials were notified of the unused 15W-40 motor oil in the creek near the Hillcrest Golf Course on Main Street North late Wednesday.
The news release said the oil “accidentally entered the creek via a storm drain from a business on the North Service Road, approximately one kilometre from where it was discovered.”
Soon after, the Moose Jaw Fire Department was called in to begin the cleanup efforts with guidance from the Ministry of Environment.
Firefighters placed absorbent booms in the water to contain the oil within the creek and prevent further migration downstream. Spot vacuums and oil absorbent pads are being used as well.
Before that, contractors conducted a water flush and capture within the storm drain lines to prepare it for the cleanup.
As of Friday at 12 noon, the City says the Moose Jaw River is at no risk of contamination.
The cleanup and remediation efforts are set to be completed sometime on Friday.
An evaluation by the Ministry of Environment is expected follow.
