The City of Calgary and the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Group have everything you want out of a new arena deal.
The deal is 50-50 and the ownership group takes the risk of maintenance, operation and repair.
The City will get some money throughout the 35-year agreement, based on ticket taxes and property taxes for adjacent development.
But there is one thing missing in this deal.
A football stadium!
The Calgary Stampeders, who are owned by the same group that owns the Flames, are left with the worst stadium in the CFL and it will be on full display for all football fans to come see at the Grey Cup in 2019.
I hope to see this as a sign these two groups can finally work together, after a contentious few years over the Flames new home. And I hope there is a phase 2 to this, because I’d argue the Stamps need a new home more than the Flames do.
But it’s no surprise the owners let the stadium die, showing their number 1 priority is definitely the NHL and not the CFL.
