Credit has to be given to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for a much more lively fan experience at the Riders games.
The Riders were at fault, like many in the CFL, of just doing things the way they’ve always done them. The video board was for commercials and highlights, and they’d run a contest here and there, and the gopher and cheer team would do their thing. Maybe you caught a little yellow football from a slingshot.
The Riders have listened clearly to their fans who want more. They’re getting more: Half time concerts; a new Gatling-style gun shooting out tee-shirts; players lip syncing to songs; continuous fan engagement on the big screen with a new in-game host, who has the gift of gab.
Heck even the mascot is getting people talking.
Hopefully we start to see in-game betting or in-game games everyone can play on their smart phone. Winners get prizes.
The draw is football, but the atmosphere is far more than that.
It’s about time, because sometimes the game is boring. The experience around it shouldn’t be, and I must say the Riders new game day experience person is earning their cheque.
