A new greenhouse in Treaty 4 is in the works to bring food and medicine to Saskatchewan First Nations.
On Friday, the File Hills Qu’Appelle (FHQ) tribal council and Farm Credit Canada agreed to construct a greenhouse to grow food and medicinal plants in hopes of addressing food security issues and the supply of traditional herbal medicines.
Edmund Bellegarde, FHQ tribal chief and chairman of FHQ Developments, said the agreement is an important step in reconciliation.
“Our Indigenous people have long held that we have value in our traditions, and if we combine them with Canadian society, we can strengthen each other,” Bellegarde said.
The greenhouse is expected to create jobs and generate revenue by selling the produce to local stores and restaurants.
Although the facility’s location is yet to be determined, the project is set to be completed by the spring of 2020.
