If you’re soaking up the sun this long weekend at the lake watch out for blue-green algae.
According to the Water Security Agency and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, recent warm temperatures may result in the quick formation of algae blooms.
Manager of Communications for the Water Security Agency Ron Podbielski explains the algae blooms are found in lakes, ponds and marshes.
“They tend to have that sort of appearance of a thick pea soup. Sometimes as well there’s a bad or rotten egg smell, or odour associated with them,” said Podbielski.
As for swimming or drinking the water, Podbielski said that’s a big no-no.
“You could get some skin irritation, eye irritation, allergic reactions, or a rash,” said Podbielski. “If you accidentally swallow this water it can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramps.”
While typically found in southern Saskatchewan, the algae blooms can also be found in northern lakes.
Pet owners and livestock producers are also advised to keep their animals away from such water.
