Multi-platinum artist Ruth B has come a long way since she was sharing her music on Vine and YouTube.
The Edmonton singer won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2017 and was nominated for four different categories for 2018.
But even now, she says songwriting is still the same, even if the audience is even bigger.
“When I made music, I was just trying to disconnect from everything that’s external and just focus on the writing and not think about much else,” the singer told The Greg Morgan Morning Show on Tuesday, four days before she’s to perform at the Regina Folk Festival.
“It’s crazy to see those songs come from my basement to bigger stages. It’s pretty cool.”
The 23-year-old is currently touring with Corinne Bailey Rae, an artist she has looked up to for a while. But whether the stage is big or small, Ruth B says she just wants to perform.
On Saturday, she’s to be one of the headliners at the Folk Fest, where the intimate setting of Victoria Park reminds her of where she came from.
“Any type of performance is always fun, just being able to connect with anybody, even if it’s one person through music, it has always been a joy. Any audience I can get is always good,” she said.
“It’s just enjoying the audience and getting to meet different people.”
Another highlight of playing festivals like Regina’s is checking out the other acts.
“I feel like I’m just like everyone else. I love live music and it’s still so much fun. Nothing has changed in that aspect. I’m excited to check it out,” she said.
