Zack Evans, Micah Johnson and A.C. Leonard won’t be playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday.
That should be devastating because they’re three of the team’s four starting defensive linemen. Defensive end Charleston Hughes is the only healthy starter. Although he leads the CFL in sacks, Hughes will be hard-pressed to generate much pressure with newbies beside him.
But Saskatchewan’s opponents, the Montreal Alouettes, don’t have starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., or tailback William Stanback. Adams sparked the Als after replacing Antonio Pipkin, tonight’s starter, who was ineffective when he began the season behind centre. Stanback has been the league’s best running back.
So let’s call it a saw-off between Montreal’s offence and Saskatchewan’s defence.
Even though this CFL game is being played in Montreal, the Roughriders are the odds-on favourites. They’re on a three-game winning streak and improving under the guidance of new starting quarterback Cody Fajardo.
As long as the Roughriders didn’t get distracted by the wonderful Montreal nightlife, they should win this game.
