For Kim Engel, it’s like school is already back.
The vice-principal and French teacher at Regina’s Ecole W.S. Hawrylak Elementary School has already settled back into her usual routine.
“Getting up early, early to bed, routine meals. In the summer, we kind of get relaxed and we forget about those things,” Engel told The Greg Morgan Morning Show on Wednesday.
Engel encourages parents to get their kids doing the same. They need structure, she said.
With school zone speed limits being reduced to 30 kilometres per hour soon, she also says parents should make sure their children are familiar with the walk to class.
“The kids need to know what their responsibility is,” she said. “They need to be aware (and) they need to use crosswalks. Basic things like that are very important for kids.”
Engel also had some advice for parents. Education takes teamwork and she urged them to get involved.
“Teamwork makes the dream work,” she said. “You need to take the time to introduce yourself (to teachers and school officials), share your skills, your talents (and) your expertise.
“Volunteer where you can, like with your school community council. That’s a vital part of our school life. We partner with those parents and they help us to meet our learning goals.”
