The Regina Humane Society’s adoption blitz is off to a spectacular start.
“(On Thursday), the shelter was crazy — but a good crazy. We adopted out 34 animals, which was honestly heartwarming. It just makes me feel so happy,” said Candace Davis, the society’s lifesaving co-ordinator.
On Thursday, the society announced it had rescued 79 cats from a home in a suspected case of animal hoarding.
According to a media release, the animals were living in squalid conditions, among garbage, feces and urine, and without proper access to food and water.
Davis told The Greg Morgan Morning Show on Friday she was surprised by how “wonderful” the cats were, despite the conditions they lived in.
She added that the humane society was tipped off about the case by neighbours.
“There were some neighbours discussing the scent coming from the home. Our animal protection officers went to investigate and after a lengthy process, this is what they discovered,” she said.
No details have been released on whether the cats’ previous owner has been charged.
Davis said animal hoarding is becoming a more common occurrence.
“We’ve had a couple (cases) in the past few years and it has been on an increase throughout the province,” she said.
Until Aug. 31, cats four months old or older can be adopted for free while those under four months old will cost $50. The $20 fee for a City of Regina licence will still apply.
