8:30 – Canadian newspaper publishers hired a Liberal lobbyist to negotiate the $595-million federal bailout package for print media, according to a scoop from Blacklock’s Reporter. The Ottawa-based news agency says the newspapers used lobbyist Isabel Metcalfe, who was formerly a federal Liberal candidate and a self-described “large-L, hard core Liberal.” Many have criticized the federal funding, and accused the Liberals of buying the support of media during the upcoming election. Tom Korski, managing editor for Blacklock’s, joins John now to discuss Metcalfe’s involvement in the bailout and the concerns that may raise.

10:00 – If politicians ignore Canada’s working class, the result could be a surge in populism, according to a detailed report by Sean Speer, a fellow at the McDonald-Laurier Institute and former economic advisor to Stephen Harper. Speer says politicians have overlooked pockets of working class people who aren’t seeing success in the current economy. While he doesn’t think there’s a danger of a huge wave of populism like the United States saw in their last election, he says the divide between urban and rural values as well as the resentment the West feels towards Eastern Canada are getting deeper. Speer joins John now to discuss the report and why he thinks populism might take off in Canada.

10:30 – Todd Dube, CEO and Chairman of SING, is set to launch new software designed as a resource of suicidal people. The free program, set to launch Sept. 3, allows patients to journal and log medications and sleep patterns, and can connect them with a facilitator. The patient’s doctor can use the software to track their progress, and the program’s algorithm can detect suicidal ideation in the patient’s reporting. Dube, who has struggled with depression and suicide attempts himself, says the program will be a valuable resource for people going through the same things he experienced. He joins John now to discuss the program.

11:00 – Saskatoon’s James Avramenko is trying to delete his Facebook account, but before he does, he’s trying to call each of his 600 Facebook friends personally and explain why he’s “breaking up with them” by ditching the social media platform. He says the project started as a joke, but it’s taken on momentum and he’s even started a podcast called “Friendless” to share his thoughts as he works through the list. After starting in January with about 600 Facebook friends, he says he’s down to 524. Avramenko joins John now to discuss his unique project.
