10:00 – Donald Savoie, Canada Research Chair in governance at the Universit de Moncton, has authored a new book that’s critical of Canadian democracy. In his 46th published book, “Democracy in Canada – The Disintegration of Our Institutions,” Savoie offers a detailed analysis of the shortcomings of our representative democracy and what the future may hold. Savoie points out issues like an activist judiciary, calls for greater transparency, the changing role of the media, and a “a federal government bureaucracy that has lost both its way and its standing.” Savoie joins Gormley now to discuss democracy and Canada and how we can improve.

10:30 – Yesterday the federal appeal court allowed six of 12 challenges against the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project to proceed. The six allowed claims focused on Indigenous consultation, while the six that were dismissed centred around environmental concerns. To help explain what the decision means, Gormley is joined by Prof. Dwight Newman, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Rights in Constitutional and International Law.

12:00 – The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce released a 36-page report this week offering a roadmap to improve Saskatchewan’s business competitiveness. The report, entitled “Beyond 2020: A Blueprint for Saskatchewan Business Competitiveness,” calls on the provincial and federal governments to meet 24 different recommendations, including a review of the entire tax system to make things easier and simpler for business owners and the adoption of a “harmonized sales tax” (HST) that combines both the six per cent PST and five per cent GST into a single sales tax. Chamber CEO Steve McLellan joins John now to discuss the report.
