SaskPower is asking people to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour at its substations after a rash of break-ins and thefts.
The Crown corporation said Tuesday the thieves are breaking into the sites and cutting copper grounding off of fence lines and cutting copper leads off the transformers.
At this point, SaskPower hasn’t attributed any outages to the thefts.
They’ve happened at SaskPower sites in area likes Regina, Moose Jaw, Balgonie and White City and even out to Carlyle and Weyburn.
A SaskPower spokesperson said the value of what’s being stolen is relatively small, but the safety risk is significant — both to the thieves and to any workers who have to go to the site afterward.
The RCMP sent out a Crime Watch advisory about the thefts, and both the RCMP and SaskPower are asking people to be on the lookout for suspicious activity around SaskPower substations. Specifically, people are asked to look for vehicle in those areas that aren’t SaskPower vehicles.
If suspicious activity is spotted, people are asked to call the RCMP at 911 or 310-RCMP.
