There will never be a baseball statistic better than this one:
San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy entered Tuesday night’s Major League Baseball game with a record of 1,995 victories and 2,019 losses. That’s an amazing coincidence because Bochy began managing in 1995 — with the San Diego Padres — and has continued through to 2019; 1995 to 2019. Same as his record
Twitter was abuzz with the statistic Tuesday and former sportscaster Chris Hodges sent along a corresponding note of amazement. How bizarre!
Baseball is a sport of statistics: In 1941 Ted Williams was the last player with a .400 batting average; Mariano Rivera’s 562 saves are the MLB record; Nolan Ryan struck out 5,714 batters; and Barry Bonds hit 762 home runs, a record that isn’t really recognized because of his reputed drug use.
Stats can tell you how many right-handed batters got hits off left-handed pitchers on Opening Day five years ago. But MLB will never have another statistic like this one!
