There are many great things about sports. They test resilience, keep those who participate in great shape, and at elite levels sports create jobs and tourism revenue.
Like most forms of entertainment, sports are also a great escape from life.
There are still 3 1/2 months of 2019 that remain, yet I think it’s safe to say that Bianca Andreescu has provided this nation with the sports moment of the year.
It was disheartening to see show hosts and media types attempt to use her for political gain this week. One show host on “The View” talked about Andreescu’s Romanian-born parents, and said, “This is what immigration brings you.” The host was making a political point.
During a Canadian TV interview, on the first day of the election campaign, one reporter told her she was now old enough to vote. It was a point that wasn’t the least bit relevant on the heels of Andreescu’s U.S. Open win.
These are soul-crushing incidents, but we can take satisfaction in the fact that something as divisive as choosing a politician doesn’t compare with Andreescu’s accomplishment of bringing a country together.
