A lot in downtown Regina that for four years featured a massive hole should soon be whole again.
“The Capital Pointe hole will be filled by the end of this week,” the City of Regina said in an email to 980 CJME. “The contractor will then be starting work on the sidewalks, street lights and fencing.
“They are expecting to be completed by mid-October weather permitting.”
The lot at the corner of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue — where the Plains Hotel used to sit — was to be the site of a 27-storey hotel and condominium building. The project was to have featured a five-level underground parkade.
The grounds sat empty between 2011 and 2015, when excavators finally began to dig a hole for the foundation.
The work stopped, though, and after long delays and a lot of back-and-forth, the Building and Accessibility Standards Appeal Board ordered the developer to fill the hole.
In April, after the developer failed to comply with the board’s order, the city took control of the project. The city then hired a contractor to do the work and the project began in June.
The hole has attracted a multitude of onlookers over the years, including a group that sarcastically bade farewell to the chasm in March.
