Garden tomatoes are coming with many imperfections right now.
Growers might have noticed some scabs and indentations, also known as “catface.”
“That just has to do with mostly the different moisture. Wet, dry, wet, dry — we had a lot of that this year,” said Rick Van Duyvendyk from Dutch Growers in Regina.
“It was a tough year for the crops in the fields. It was a tough year for our gardens as well.”
Speaking on The Greg Morgan Morning Show on Wednesday, Van Duyvendyk also had some advice for growers as sub-zero temperatures are expected by Friday.
His advice is to wrap tomatoes in paper.
“Make sure the tomatoes aren’t touching each other on the piece of paper and they’ll ripen inside,” he said.
Gardening season isn’t over, though.
Van Duyvendyk said it’s a good time to put down fall fertilizer and plant spring bulbs.
“Your tulips, your daffodils, your crocuses,” he said. “The best time to plant garlic is in the fall. If you want a really good crop of garlic next year, plant your garlic bulbs now.”
