The union representing nearly 800 workers at the Co-op refinery in Regina has declared an impasse in contract negotiations.
The collective agreement between Unifor Local 594 and the refinery expired in February.
On Friday, a union spokesperson said its members are being pressed to accept concessions in relation to their pension and job security.
“We have spent a considerable amount of time at the bargaining table to try and find resolve to that with little movement from the company,” said Scott Doherty, executive assistant to Unifor’s national president.
Doherty said the company is demanding to move its workers from a defined benefit contribution plan to a defined contribution plan.
“There’s no reason for our members to have to take concessions when (the company) posted a profit of $1.1 billion last year,” said Doherty.
A spokesperson with Federated Co-operatives Limited would not comment on details of the pension plan but said the company is disappointed the union declared an impasse. The company remains committed to the collective bargaining process, the spokesperson added.
Now that the union has filed for an impasse, Saskatchewan’s minister of labour will appoint a mediator.
