A 65-year-old man appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on Monday after he allegedly shot an RCMP vehicle in Carnduff on Thursday night.
According to a media release from the RCMP, an officer from the Carnduff detachment was returning the man to his house after he had been arrested, charged and released for impaired driving and refusal to submit to a breath test.
After arriving at the man’s home, the officer took the man — who had been co-operative throughout the process — out of the police vehicle and walked him into the garage. There, they were met by the man’s wife.
The man said he had to go to the bathroom and walked toward a door, even though the officer told the man to stay in the garage. Suspicious, the officer asked the man’s wife if there was a bathroom in the garage and she replied there wasn’t.
“The officer got closer to the unknown door when he heard the distinctive sound of a round of a shotgun being chambered,” the media release said. “The officer drew his pistol and backed away from the door as the accused exited the room carrying a shotgun pointed at the ceiling.”
The officer told the man to drop the shotgun, but the man instead told his wife to open the garage door. After going outside, he shot at the police vehicle — hitting it in the windshield — and ran into a nearby wooded area.
The officer gave chase and soon was joined by other officers and a police dog. When the dog arrived, the man walked out of the woods and surrendered. His shotgun subsequently was found in the woods.
Gary Millions was taken into custody and held there prior to his court appearance. He’s to make his next appearance Oct. 7.
