8:30 – Justin Trudeau took part in his first debate of the federal election campaign Wednesday evening, squaring off against Andrew Scheer, Jagmeet Singh, and Yves-Franois Blanchet in the French-language TVA debate. Montreal-based Globe and Mail Reporter Les Perreaux said it’s hard to underestimate the advantage Blanchet held during the debate, and he joins John now to discuss what happened on the stage and how the leaders’ messages resonated with the debate’s francophone audience.

9:00 – Bug’s Day: The HOUR OF RAGE!
10:00 – On Monday we heard from Courtland Klien, a worker at Evraz Regina with the United Steel Workers 5890 chapter, who took issue with a statement released by the United Steel Workers’ National Director Ken Neumann. In the statement, Neumann said the union supported the national day of action on climate change and said “our members are urging governments to come up with a real and ambitious plan to transition to a low-carbon economy.” Klein said members of the union in Regina, who manufacture steel pipelines, couldn’t disagree with the statement more as their jobs hinge on the continued use of fossil fuels. Neumann joins Gormley now to address the concerns raised by Klein.

11:00 – New polling data from DART for the Toronto Sun is taking a look at gun control, and how Canadians view gun crime. Despite the Liberals’ campaign promise to ban assault weapons and allow cities to ban handguns, 80% of Canadians agreed with the statement that “gun violence and shootings are mainly committed by gangs or criminals with handguns smuggled into the country from across the border.” Only 20% believed that gun violence is mainly committed with weapons stolen from licenced and vetted gun owners. Also, 81% of respondents said the Canadian government should focus on cross-border smuggling rather than “cracking down on licenced gun owners,” and 71% thought political talk on gun bans was just “smoke and mirrors” designed to get votes rather than address the real issue. John Wright is a pollster and partner with DART, and he joins John to discuss the results of their poll.
