Preparations are gearing up for the NHL Heritage Classic.
The regular-season contest between the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets is to be played Oct. 26 at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.
With the rink set to take shape soon, the entertainment slate already has been set. Performances by Jess Moskaluke, The Sheepdogs and the Hunter Brothers are on the schedule.
The lineup for the outdoor game was announced on Thursday.
“(NHL officials) wanted something that was tied to Western Canada, something tied to Saskatchewan and I think they did a great job selecting them,” said Tim Reid, president and CEO of Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) — the organization that operates Evraz Place.
“For those who have a ticket to the event, I think you’re going to have a real special (time) and really a time we’ll make history and you won’t forget it.”
According to a news release from the NHL, Moskaluke will play the opening ceremony with the Hunter Brothers. They will be joined by cadets and officers from the RCMP’s Regina detachment and Depot training academy.
The Hunter Brothers will sing the national anthem as members of the Canadian Armed Forces from Regina and Moose Jaw unfurl a flag. The ceremony will also include a flyover by a CC-130H Hercules from Winnipeg.
“The NHL does such a fantastic job of just understanding what really is impactful in the community,” Reid said during the Greg Morgan Morning Show.
“You’re going to see a real recognition with the RCMP side of things (and) you’re going to see a celebration of the relationship that we show with our Indigenous community.”
The Sheepdogs will perform during the first intermission. Moskaluke will return to the stage during the second.
Tickets for the game are still available, Reid said.
Preparations start on Tuesday and Reid said people will notice more traffic near the airport as the league starts flying in about 50 workers per day.
