The hockey world has taken notice of the Edmonton Oilers’ fast start.
The team has won six of seven games so far this season, and there are obvious reasons for this. Superstar Connor McDavid is one of the best players in the NHL. He has put up 17 points in Edmonton’s first seven games. Newly acquired James Neal is doing what team management expected; he has eight goals in the team’s first seven contests.
On the heels of a 6-3 win over Philadelphia, in which McDavid had five points, head coach Dave Tippett made an interesting point when he said the Oilers wouldn’t have won without the goaltending of Mikko Koskinen. Koskinen, who has shared duties with Mike Smith this season, made 49 saves in the game.
In putting the spotlight on his goaltender, Tippett achieved two things. He got the microscope off McDavid for the time being, and made the point that if the winning is going to continue, efforts like the one from Koskinen has to come from other members of this team, no matter their position or stature.
