This World Series just got that much more interesting.
The wild-card Washington Nationals, who have defied the odds more than once, have ripped home-field advantage away from the 107-win Houston Astros. I’m not surprised that the Nationals won a game in this series, but I am surprised, and impressed, by how resilient this team was in the series opener.
The Game 1 winner, Max Scherzer, didn’t have his best stuff early as Houston jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead. Yet Scherzer battled through to get the win. It was 35-year-old Ryan Zimmerman who cut into Houston’s early lead with a home run on the road to start the offence.
Last night’s series opener was startling in some ways, but perhaps we shouldn’t be that shocked. This is a team that at one point was 19-31 in the regular season and fought hard to get where it is. The Nationals showed that same sort of fight in Game 1 of the series last night.
The Nationals may not be favoured, but they aren’t going away either.
