Regina’s chapter of Crime Stoppers had the biggest increase in seizures of the proceeds of crime in the world last year for a city this size.
For 2018, tips to the organization helped recover $587,700 worth of drugs and stolen property. That’s a 208-per-cent increase from 2017, and a larger amount than the previous four years combined.
The award was presented in Singapore, with Regina selected from among the group’s 1,700 linked organizations.
Craig Perrault, president of Regina Crime Stoppers, said the award will increase awareness of the program and show how the system works. It also will help spread information about the new ways to report, like the Crime Stoppers app.
A big part of the increase was one single tip that helped police recover $400,000 worth of property.
“To get that total amount, it really shows that it has hit all types of people, knowing that they can report safely,” Perrault said. “So, with that type of seizure that’s so big, it’s an ongoing piece.
“It meant the police already had their tools in place. It meant that they needed that final piece of the puzzle to come and secure that. It just shows that we’re all working together, I think that’s the biggest thing.”
Regina Police Chief Evan Bray is proud of Crime Stoppers. He said the award speaks to the value the group has to the police, but also the community.
“I talk about that being great for our police service and our investigations and for our city, but knowing on a world stage that that ranks No. 1, I think that’s pretty cool,” said Bray.
Bray doesn’t think the increase in numbers for 2018 speaks to an increase in crime, pointing to the one tip which made up the bulk of the seizure total.
Neither Perrault nor Bray was willing to give more details on the big seizure, with Bray saying he wanted to make sure it was through the courts.
