After my childhood team (the Los Angeles Dodgers) was bounced from the 2019 playoffs, I got behind the Houston Astros. I didn’t really have a reason other than when they won the 2017 World Series, they did it with the 18th-highest payroll in Major League Baseball.
Yes, they beat my Dodgers two years ago, but A.J. Hinch managed the team so well that I thought it would be great to see him lead the team to another championship in 2019. They were my default team.
On Wednesday, the Astros fell short to the Washington Nationals. The Nationals faced elimination a number of times in the playoffs, and were 12 games under .500 at one point in the regular season.
Washington’s resilience is mind-boggling. Their ace couldn’t pitch in Game 5 of the series, and as a result they needed to win games 6 and 7 on the road to claim the title — and they did that. We witnessed an amazing Fall Classic.
Come April, I’ll be backing the Dodgers again, but the Nationals have certainly made a case to be my default team.
