The Regina Police Service has confirmed the body found last Saturday northeast of Regina was that of Jenaya Wapemoose.
The police held a media conference Monday to discuss the charges that had been laid against two people in connection with Wapemoose’s murder.
Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said at the time the remains hadn’t been positively identified, but the police suspected that the body was that of Wapemoose.
On Friday, police issued a media release saying that a positive identification had been established with the help of the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.
“The family of Jenaya Wapemoose has been advised and the investigators, along with RPS Victim Services, continue to offer support and referrals to resources,” the media release said.
Wapemoose, 22, was last seen March 27 and hadn’t been heard from on social media since April 7. She was reported missing to the Regina police on May 7.
In late June, the police said in a media release that the case was “considered suspicious, based on the evidence gathered in the extensive investigation of her disappearance.”
On Monday, the police charged Eric Lee Alvin Kakakaway of Regina with second-degree murder and offering an indignity to a human body. As well, Jeannette Mavis Kakakaway of Regina was charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
The Kakakaways made their first court appearances last Monday. They’re to return to court on Monday.
