10:30 – Petroleum giant Encana has moved its headquarters from Calgary to the United States and changing its name to Ovintiv, in a move they say is designed to increase access to American investors. CEO Doug Suttles says the changes won’t affect any Canadian staff or result in layoffs, and the company won’t divert investments from oil and gas projects in Canada, but many – including Alberta’s Premier Jason Kenney – are blaming the move on Justin Trudeau’s policies. Duane Bratt is Chair of the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at Calgary’s Mount Royal University, and he says that while Trudeau’s policies were likely one factor in the move, there are other factors at play as well including the fall in Alberta natural gas prices and the rise of US shale. Bratt joins Mike now to discuss the move and how much of the decision was influenced by politics.
