The media in the centre of the universe (Toronto) is piling on when it comes to Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock. The heat is on a coach who has won at every level imaginable but who is struggling in Toronto.
When asked about his own fate, Babcock said, “I’ve always bet on Mike Babcock. I’ll continue to bet on him.”
Every coach needs to believe in himself and those around him, but I was a little surprised at his third-person reference.
When he was asked to respond to the growing speculation that he was on borrowed time if this current slump continued, he talked about how good his life was because if his kids were young, he’d never coach in Toronto.
That wasn’t a real positive comment about the media and the market where he makes his living, and a very nice living at that.
I’m sure there are other answers that would have satisfied fans.
These are responses from yet another Toronto hockey coach, under an intense microscope, who doesn’t appear to know how to stick handle around the critics.
