I can understand the frustration of young coaches who are begging to get a chance to move up the chain.
The coaching vacancies in the CFL have brought forward a lot of the same old, same old.
Jason Maas and Mike Benevides could be the co-ordinators for the B.C. Lions.
Paul LaPolice may get another head-coaching job, which I’m not opposed to, as he got a raw deal in Winnipeg.
But young coaches do believe they get overlooked because of the unknown.
Jason Shivers’ first year as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defensive co-ordinator was outstanding. And who were Paul LaPolice and Jason Maas before they got that shot?
That’s why Ryan Dinwiddie in Calgary, Buck Pierce in Winnipeg and Craig Butler in Hamilton pique my interest more than some of the old guard. They’re young coaches from successful programs who should be heavy favourites for co-ordinator positions soon.
They’re coaches I hope I hear more about as coaching vacancies get filled across the league.
