New Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive co-ordinator Jason Maas said something interesting during Friday’s introductory news conference.
He was asked about Cody Fajardo’s touchdown numbers from 2019. He had 18 TD passes and just eight interceptions in his first season, which is impressive for a first-year starter.
Maas more or less said if you make good decisions as a quarterback, numbers take care of themselves.
Craig Dickenson followed up by suggesting that the best way to rest a defence is to keep an offence on the field.
For a numbers nerd like yours truly, those responses lacked a little substance, but they do have merit.
Just about every Rider fan is wondering what the chemistry will be like between Maas and Fajardo.
Fajardo, who is prepping for his sophomore season as a starter, can benefit from having a former quarterback as his offensive co-ordinator — providing Maas can stay calm.
To simply protect the football and live to see another play is likely a good strategy for a quarterback and co-ordinator in their first year together.
