A 28-year-old Regina man is facing 12 charges — including three of assaulting a police officer — after an incident Saturday.
According to the Regina Police Service, officers were sent to a restaurant in the 100 block of Albert Street at around 10:45 a.m., for a report of a vehicle parked improperly behind the business.
Officers found in the car two people, one of whom was on release conditions. That gave police the right to search the car for drugs.
When the driver was asked to get out of the vehicle, police allege he put the car into gear and tried to drive off.
“A struggle followed in which police attempted to reach into the vehicle to take it out of gear,” said a media release issued by the police. “It’s alleged the suspect tried to disarm officers, and assault them, while trying to drive away.”
The struggle continued even after the officers got the man out of the car. Police say subsequent searches found a substance believed to be methamphetamine on the man and a can of bear spray in the car.
In addition to three charges of assaulting a police officer, the man also faces two charges each of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm and attempting to disarm a peace officer, and one charge each of breach of recognizance, breach of probation, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace and possession of a scheduled substance.
He made his first court appearance Monday.
