The SJHL’s Estevan Bruins have been named the host team for the 2022 Canadian junior A hockey championship tournament.
The announcement was made Thursday in Estevan. The tournament is to run in May 2022 at Affinity Place.
“This is a very proud day for the City of Estevan, for the Estevan Bruins Hockey Club and southeast Saskatchewan,” Greg Hoffort, an Estevan city councillor and the co-chair of the bid committee. “With city support, our first-class facility and the strong hockey tradition here in Estevan, we are confident in our ability to host one of the best championships to date.”
Saskatchewan has played host to the tournament five times since 1995. The event was held in Lloydminster (in 2016), Humboldt (2012), Weyburn (2005), Yorkton (1999) and Melfort (1996).
The annual tournament features four regional champions as well as a host team.
The winners of the Anavet Cup (a series between the champions of the Saskatchewan and Manitoba leagues), the Doyle Cup (a series between the winners of the B.C. and Alberta loops), the Dudley Hewitt Cup (a tournament featuring champions of the Superior International, Northern Ontario and Ontario leagues) and the Fred Page Cup (a tourney between the champions of the Central Canada, Quebec and Maritime leagues) join a host team to play for the national title.
