Despite out-shooting their opponent 30-27, the Saskatoon Blades couldn’t come away with the win against the Kamloops Blazers and saw their losing streak grow to four games.
The game started out at a furious pace going back and forth but the Blazer’s drew first blood seven minutes into the game.
The pace slowed considerably in the second period but the Blades were still able to tie the game with just over four minutes left in the frame.
The tie game lasted just two minutes and 49 seconds before Saskatoon native and Blazer’s alternate captain, Connor Zary, scored with 1:52 left in the period.
The hometown boy’s goal sparked the Blazers. By the third period Saskatoon had lost all the energy they had in the first and the game got away from them.
“It was a good one, hard fought battle for the first couple periods and then in the third we really got our feet under us and we kind of took it to Saskatoon and that’s when we really opened the game up,” said Zary, who was playing in front of nearly 20 friends and family at the Sasktel Centre.
“It’s pretty awesome. A month ago I was back here for Canada Russia and had lots of family here so that was pretty cool and then coming back playing on my club team it’s just as special. It’s fun coming back because it’s just my second time playing here, and it’s always special when you can have friends and family watching you.”
The Blazer’s outscored the Blades three to one in the third period for a final score of 5-2 in favour of the visitors.
The Blades will shift their focus to Sunday when they take on the Prince Albert Raiders and try to end their losing skid in their annual teddy bear toss game.
That game gets underway at 4 p.m. at the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon.
