Const. Mike Seel of the Regina Police Service had a close call while trying to deal with an unregistered vehicle this month.
Seel said the vehicle was stopped in traffic, so he got out and approached the driver’s door. That was when the driver tried to manoeuvre through two cars stopped beside them.
“I didn’t realize how close I was to the car beside me until I went to open up the driver’s side door and I felt the car beside me right behind me. I let go of the door handle and moved out of the way. (The driver) squeezed their way through traffic and drove off,” Seel said on Monday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show.
The officer said police are still trying to find the driver.
“I don’t know if they went out of town or if they switched the plates on the car or not,” Seel said. “I’m still working on that to see if I can track the person down.”
Seel is well-known in the city for his work stopping distracted drivers.
Despite his tweets and media appearances, some people still try to use their cellphones while behind the wheel.
“I had a gentleman last week, it was the fourth time I’ve caught him on his cellphone since April 2018,” Seel said. “The previous times, he wasn’t very happy to see me. This time, he was a lot nicer. He realized he was busted.”
Seel also warned that police are on the lookout for impaired drivers this month, either with checkstops or unmarked cars circling bars.
For Novice 1 and Novice 2 drivers and those with a Class 7 licence, it’s zero tolerance for having alcohol in their systems while behind the wheel.
“If you’re caught, the penalties are a lot more, the suspensions are higher (and) the impoundments are higher,” Seel said.
As well, he said people can be charged with impaired driving even if their blood-alcohol content is below .08.
“You can still be impaired and not be over .08,” he said.
“I know for me, I don’t drink very often at all. This weekend, we had friends over (and) I had one drink. We were at home but I realized I would not drive even after having one drink. It affects everyone differently.”
