A Saskatchewan smartphone app is reminding parents a child may still be in their vehicle.
It was developed in part by Regina-based pediatrician Dr. James Robertson after he heard how many children died in hot cars in North America each year.
“It’s not done on purpose (leaving kids in cars),” Robertson said. “This destroys lives, not only is a child lost, but you don’t recover from something like that.”
He partnered with a developer, Narmer Technology, to create the easy-to-use app.
“So you download it onto the phone and it will turn itself on as soon as your car starts driving,” Robertson explained. “Two and a half to three minutes after you’ve stopped driving it will set off an alarm and a screenshot will say ‘have you left anyone in the car?’.”
After a month of building the Back Seat Safety app with the developer and a few months of testing, it is now available for Apple and Android phones.
Robertson said there are plans to expand the app to include reminders for pets left behind.
