Rangers and Knicks owner James Dolan has often been criticized by sports fans in New York. (But really, which sports owner hasn’t been called out by Big Apple sports fans?)
ESPN is now reporting that Dolan is targeting Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri to run the Knicks. The likable Ujiri was the architect of a Raptors team that brought this country its first-ever NBA championship last summer, so we shouldn’t be surprised that a story like this has emerged.
However, under Dolan’s watch, the Knicks have been a sideshow in recent years. It was just three years ago that security dragged former Knicks star Charles Oakley out of Madison Square Garden, on television, for criticizing Dolan. That could have been handled so much better. On the court, the Knicks have won just one playoff series in nearly two decades.
Dolan, from a distance, comes across as a guy who is thin-skinned, ruthless and incapable. It’s hard to imagine that the classy Masai Ujiri would be a fit.
Anything can happen, but Canada is hoping that opposites don’t attract.
