A Regina police officer shot an aggressive dog after it began running at him in an alley around noon Tuesday.
Police were dispatched to the 1000 block of Broder Street for a report of a disturbance. The information police had received was that a man was screaming inside a home while two large dogs were loose outside and displaying aggressive behaviour.
Police arrived and saw two dogs in the alley behind the home. The dogs were able to move freely through the fence between the alley and the backyard.
As one officer exited the vehicle, one of the dogs immediately ran towards the officer, police said in a media release.
The officer drew his gun and began to walk backwards and yell at the dogs. As the dogs got closer, the officer shot his gun in the direction of the larger of the two dogs, according to police.
The dogs retreated into the backyard and into the home. Police said the larger dog had been shot and was injured.
The man inside the home came outside and began to talk to police. Police said the man was told to put his dogs away but he refused. Police said they told the man one of the dogs had been shot and needed medical attention but the man continued to argue and was arrested for breach of the peace.
Police and animal control officers made their way into the home and found the injured dog plus two other dogs, which were put into kennels. The injured dog was transported to veterinary care.
The Regina Humane Society told police that the dogs had a documented history of aggressive behaviour and that they were released from quarantine Monday.
