Plans for two new pools in Regina got pushed along this week at city committees.
The finance and administration committee approved a plan for an extra $880,000 for the new Maple Leaf Pool.
City administration found the bids to build the pool were quite a bit higher than the $4.5 million that was estimated. According to Mayor Michael Fougere, it’s an increase that’s necessary.
“This is the cost of, actually, construction. Unless we make the pool smaller, which I don’t think we should do because it’s already not very big, this is what the market’s saying, this is the cost,” said Fougere.
Fougere said there won’t be a tax increase to pay for the extra cost, he explained there is the Recreation/Culture Capital Program, or reserves for things like that.
The final design for the new Wascana Pool was also given the go-ahead by council’s executive committee. Administration put in its report, recommending two smaller separate pools—one for leisure and one for sport — as well as other amenities like a toddler zone and lazy river.
Fougere said there are some who are against this design.
“There’s a strong group that wants a 50-metre pool, and that’s part of the conundrum. But we did do a lot of public consultation and we think we’ve got the balance between those who want to do competitive swimming and those who leisurely swimming as well,” said Fougere.
On Wednesday, after some discussion around possibly going to a different design, executive council decided to go with the administration’s recommendation and filed the report, allowing the project to go to the detailed design phase.
