The Saskatoon Blades failed to make up any ground in the East Division standings, losing to the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-2 Friday.
It was the second straight loss to Brandon after a 5-1 drubbing on Wednesday.
The first period proved to be the Blades downfall. First period goals from Cole Reinhardt, Luka Burzan and Duncan Pierce widened the Wheat Kings lead to 3-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Saskatoon countered in the second period with goals from Kyle Crnkovic and Zach Huber to narrow the Wheaties lead to 3-2 entering the third period.
A strong performance from goaltender Jiri Patera kept the Blades at bay in the third period before Pierce would ice the game with his second goal of the game, an empty-net marker with 19 seconds remaining.
Jonny Lambos and Marcus Sekundiak led the Wheat Kings with two assists.
Blades goaltender Nolan Maier registered 26 saves in the loss.
Saskatoon firmly holds the last wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference with 59 points. Brandon remains third in the Eastern Conference with 63 points, two points behind the Winnipeg Ice and four points behind the Prince Albert Raiders for the division lead.
