The XFL is starting to pluck a handful of CFLers.
Future Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductee S.J. Green went south. Then Derek Dennis found work. Receiver Armanti Edwards has also made the decision to join the XFL over the CFL.
Should the CFL be at all concerned? No, not yet.
Green, Dennis and Edwards were free agents and didn’t exactly have teams clamouring for their services.
When you look at the players choosing the XFL over the CFL, that’s not totally the truth. The players are choosing the XFL over waiting for CFL interest.
The time to be concerned is if players are heading to free agency with the intent to sign in the XFL. So far that’s not happening.
The CFL raising the minimum salary is the first step to countering other leagues popping up. If the XFL trend continues with even bigger-name stars, the CFL is going to be pushed to give more of a revenue share to players.
And that means a much more even share of the pie.
