Why can’t the Ottawa Senators be winners at the NHL trade deadline?
Out of the teams that were wheeling and dealing, the Senators can argue they got exactly what they wanted: A great number of draft picks for talent that was likely departing anyway.
Sure, the Penguins, Oilers, ‘Canes and Golden Knights did a good job bolstering their rosters, but the Senators come out winners on the sellers’ end for sure.
A first-, second-, and potentially third-round draft pick for Jean-Gabriel Pageau is impressive. The Senators know what they’re doing. They’re tearing it down to build it up again and you’re only going to do that with a plethora of picks to improve the chances of getting it right.
They have two things most general managers would love to have. They have a tonne of cap space and seven picks in the first two rounds. You wonder what damage Pierre Doirion could do with trades and picks leading into draft day and the following free-agency period.
They may be the winners of trade deadline day 2020, but we won’t know it until two or three years from now.
