Members of the Canadian Football League Players’ Association are in Las Vegas voting in a new executive.
And believe it or not, they are two years away from having to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.
This makes their vote imperative for the strength of the association moving into the next round of bargaining with the league.
It is clear there is still a bit of a disconnect within the association between representing the interests of Canadian and American players, though they’ve made some strides.
George Reed was the last American to be president of the association back in the early ’90s. With Jeff Keeping stepping down, there is a vacancy, so maybe it’s time for another American to take on a larger role.
However it shakes out, the strength of the association needs to remain. Forever, the league and its member clubs have had the majority of the power and still take a huge share of football revenue.
This week is important to continue building on the momentum the players’ association has started and to get the players a bigger share of the pie when the current CBA expires in 2022.
