The first week of March is bringing spring-like conditions to Saskatchewan, unlike the wintery weather that created treacherous driving conditions over the weekend.
Snow and strong winds prompted the RCMP from several detachments to issue warnings Saturday evening and Sunday morning about zero visibility, icy roads, and vehicles in the ditch.
Shelley Bedry and daughter Alex got caught in the storm shortly after leaving Rosetown on Saturday evening. She said the snow on Highway 7 was blinding.
“I had my daughter watching the rumble strip and white line to guide me,” she recalled. “You couldn’t even see whether you were in the incoming lane or your lane. The wind gusts were that bad.”
They only managed to get to Zealandia before deciding to pull over. Bedry had friends in town to stay with, but others weren’t so lucky; Bedry noted they passed many vehicles waiting out the storm on the side of the highway.
“When we stopped, I was shaking,” she said. “I’ve never been so scared driving on the highway, ever.”
Bedry said she was prepared with a winter survival kit, but fortunately didn’t need it.
