After only three seasons of football, Mosaic Stadium needs some repairs.
Jeff May, the manager of sport facilities and special events for the City of Regina, said Tuesday the city is seeking a contractor to replace the metal joint covers on the main concourse level that are beginning to show some wear and tear.
He said, at the time of construction, the joint covers that were installed were standard for other sports stadiums and deemed to be appropriate.
“What we’ve found over the past three years of operating the stadium is that (the joint covers) are not holding up as well as we would like,” May explained.
Expansion joints are structural gaps that allow for the building to expand and contract for seasonal temperature changes. Each gap is filled with a rubber membrane that prevents moisture from getting in below, while the cover is a metal plate that goes over the joint to protect it and provide a smooth surface for walking.
People walking would notice them as metal plates bolted into the concrete.
“I don’t know if there’s a specific point in time that I could say we noticed a problem. I think just as we’ve been operating (the stadium) we’ve just noticed here and there, ‘Oh, that one’s lifting. This one looks a little odd. We should probably find something that’s better, ‘ ” May said.
While the joint covers aren’t considered to compromise the structure of the stadium, May said over time they could lead to a bumpy surface on the concourse as they start to shift and dip.
When asked if the company that built the stadium under a P3 should pay for the repairs, May said no because the original plates were considered to be adequate at the time of construction.
Instead, the cost of $100,000 will come out of the annual operating and maintenance budget for the stadium. When asked what the total annual operating budget would be, May couldn’t say.
While a contractor has not been announced at this time, May said the work should be complete ahead of the 2020 CFL season.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders moved into the stadium prior to the 2017 season after leaving old Mosaic Stadium.
