A winter storm warning is in effect for some areas of southwestern Saskatchewan, while other areas are under a snowfall warning.
Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning Friday at 4:30 a.m., for regions around Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Val Marie and Cypress Hills.
“Snowfall, heavy at times, will spread into the Cypress Hills tonight and continue eastwards on Saturday,” the alert read. “Northeasterly winds will strengthen today and persist through Saturday.
“These winds will combine with the falling snow to produce periods of significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow. The snow will taper off on Saturday night with total snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 centimetres in the Cypress Hills and 15 to 25 cm through the rest of the warned area.”
Just before 10:30 a.m., the agency put out a snowfall warning for areas around Leader and Gull Lake.
“Snowfall totals for this event will be in the five to 10 cm range for most of the region,” the alert read. “However, areas of higher terrain, or localities toward the Alberta border or the Trans-Canada Highway may see 10 to 20 cm of new snow before the snowfall tapers off Saturday night.”
