The city is looking for a big ask from the province as it responds to Saskatchewan’s declaring a state of emergency because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
City director of emergency operations, Pamela Goulden-McLeod said they’re urging the province to ban all public gatherings altogether.
Earlier in the day Wednesday, the province announced that under the state of emergency, public gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited.
“What we do in the next 24 to 48 hours will determine the long-term outcome for our city,” she said.
Additionally, the City of Saskatoon has closed all of its facilities to the public, including city hall, after the provincial state of emergency was declared.
The change was announced Wednesday afternoon in a city press conference delivered over the phone, and via Skype.
Goulden-McLeod discussed the importance of the proposed ban.
“It’s about closing so that we don’t have groups of people together in a location, and that’s essential to stop the spread of COVID-19, and we are just asking the city of Saskatoon residents, the businesses, everybody to step up and do whatever they can to stop this to protect all of our loved ones.”
City Manager Jeff Jorgenson said closing all city facilities is an important preventative measure and will help protect those who are most vulnerable in Saskatoon.
“Our interest is to continue to serve the needs of the citizens of Saskatoon, but also to take appropriate action in response to the serious situation that we face,” he said.
“While we are closed to the public, our business operations will continue to provide essential services for our residents as much as possible.”
Saskatoon city council will be meeting Thursday at noon to discuss preventative measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The expectation at this time is daily updates will be issued by the city to continue to inform the public just what the plan is moving forward, in the unprecedented and ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the city said there are many services offered online that the people of Saskatoon can access.
