It’s great to see Olympic federations from across the globe force the International Olympic Committee’s hand to actually do something about the upcoming Tokyo Games.
Canada and Australia are the biggest national bodies to say they’re pulling their athletes from competing in 2020 if the Games go ahead, urging a year postponement.
American track and field and swimming have urged the same.
Brazil, Slovenia and Norway are among other countries pushing for a postponement. This is all to do with the IOC last week saying it’s ramming ahead with plans to be on time with the Games in July and the Paralympic Games in August.
Because of the pressure, finally the IOC sounds like it’s coming around to doing the obvious thing: Calling off 2020 and doing it all again in 2021.
Just over half of the qualifications have been completed and training centres are being forced to close around the globe.
The decision should be obvious. For an event that only happens every four years, what’s an extra year when you’re looking out for the health and safety of thousands of athletes and spectators?
