SaskPower is warning customers about a phone scam that’s making the rounds.
According to the Crown corporation, someone has been calling customers and telling them their bills are overdue, which could lead to disconnection. The number on the call display is SaskPower’s actual customer care line (1-888-757-6937).
The scammer tells the customers to phone another number to discuss their bills, or to visit a business that the scammer calls a SaskPower kiosk. There, the customers are directed to phone another number to get payment instructions.
There also have been cases in which customers are told to go to a business in Regina and buy Bitcoins to pay the scammer.
To date, the calls have been made only to customers in Regina.
SaskPower reminded residents that it never demands payment in Bitcoins, it doesn’t call customers and tell them to phone another number, and it currently is not disconnecting customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Customers are being urged to hang up if they get a dubious call and to phone SaskPower at 1-888-757-6937 to verify their accounts. The local police also should be contacted, as should the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501).
