The University of Regina is holding the line on tuition for the 2020-21 school year.
The school’s operating budget of about $238 million was approved by the board of governors on Tuesday. Tuition and fees will remain at the levels they were at during the 2019-20 school year.
“As the world contends with the economic and social repercussions of a global pandemic, the University of Regina’s 26th consecutive balanced operating budget is focused on providing stability and support for our students, faculty and staff,” Roger Brandvold, the chair of the university’s board of governors, said in a media release.
“The board appreciates the tremendous work of the university’s executive and leadership in developing a plan to continue delivering a robust learning experience for students while maintaining our connections with our communities during these unprecedented times.”
According to the release, the university was able to hold tuition steady because of a $1.07-million increase in support it received from the Government of Saskatchewan and because of higher-than-expected revenue due to increased enrolment last year.
The U of R, which has recorded 11 straight years of enrolment growth, is forecasting that student numbers in the 2020-21 school year will be similar to last year’s numbers — and the budget reflects that estimate.
If enrolment and revenues drop, the school said it will manage that with savings in operating costs.
