8:30 – Health Canada has approved a serological test which can be used to detect whether someone has had COVID-19 by checking for antibodies in their blood. Although the Italian-made DiaSorin LIAISON test isn’t yet available to the general public, the antibody test means widespread public testing could be coming soon to Canada. But while testing for antibodies has been touted as a major step forward, COVID-19 immunity is not yet fully understood. Epidemiologist Cynthia Carr joins Gormley to discuss the benefits and limitations of antibody testing for COVID-19.

10:00 – The COVID-19 pandemic has many people calling for a guaranteed income in Canada, but economist Philip Cross says it’s a bad idea, and even worse during a crisis. Cross says Canada has been moving towards a basic income for years, but implementing it would likely mean a sharp increase in taxes, more inequality, and many Canadians left with little incentive to work. Cross joins Gormley to explain. Do you think a guaranteed income could work in Canada? Call 1-877-332-8255 and join the conversation!

11:00 – Do kids really need social media in their lives? Facebook’s Messenger Kids feature launched in late April, and it’s already a hit with young people who want to stay connected to their friends during COVID-19 and parents who want some peace and quiet. But even with parental controls, are there risks when kids start chatting, video-calling, and sharing photos? How young is too young for social media? How much attention should parents pay to their kids’ online activity? To help answer these questions, Gormley is joined by psychology professor Dr. Jean Twenge, who’s written some of the leading research on the effects too much technology can have on developing minds and says heavy social media use among eight graders can increase their risk of depression by up to 27 per cent.
